Advanced Diver Medic (MedTech) Concentration

Lead Faculty: Mr. James A. Spelich

Marine Technology II
Quarter Credits:
24

Length: 20 weeks

Goal: To prepare students to provide immediate and responsible medical assistance at the scene of an injury or illness, particularly on offshore rigs and in other remote locations. Students gain the ability to provide basic life support and emergency first aid medical care for diving related injuries and diseases. The graduate is qualified to take the exam to be certified as an EMT-Basic by the National Registry Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and receives the Advanced Diving Medical Technician certification through the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT).

Equipment: Each student must provide a uniform as specified by the contracting ambulance company.  Students may also be required to purchase textbooks, medical bags, and other supplies necessary for the concentration.

At the student's own expense, students may be required to undergo a background check, drug screen, and approval by hospitals, clinics, and ambulance companies prior to participating in ambulance ride-alongs and emergency room observations.   Students may be required to obtain medical malpractice insurance at a nominal fee during their ambulance ride-alongs and hospital practicums.

Careers

MedTech training provides the students with the additional skills of an Advance Diver Medic. These skills enhance employment opportunities for students desiring to work in the diving industry. The Association of Diving Contractors International (ADCI) recommends at least one qualified Diver Medic per shift on every commercial diving operation.

Students also qualify to sit for the certified hyperbaric technician exam to become CHTs by the NBDHMT after completing additional chamber operation hours outside of the coursework.

Some states and federal agencies require that an individual be 18 years of age to be qualified for licensure or certification. Certain felony convictions could impact certification as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and Diver Medical Technician.
